How often should you clean your air conditioner?
Yearly? Every two years? More often with heavy use? We've gathered what affects cleaning frequency and the signs that it's time.
There's no single right answer to "how often" — it depends on how much and how you use your air conditioner. But there are a few simple guidelines to help you decide.
The general rule: once a year
For most homes, one professional cleaning per year before the season starts is plenty. Your unit will begin summer with a clean interior, full cooling capacity, and accumulated dust/mold stays out of your air.
When should you clean more often (twice a year)?
- Heavy use – if your air conditioner runs several hours daily through the summer.
- Pets in the home – hair and fur clog filters and heat exchangers faster.
- Allergies or respiratory sensitivity in the family – clean indoor air is especially important here.
- Dusty environment – near main roads or construction sites, it gets dirty quicker.
- Using it for heating in winter – then it works year-round, not just summer.
Tell-tale signs it's time
- Smell – musty, "air conditioner smell" when you turn it on.
- Weaker cooling – at the same setting, the room cools slower.
- Visible dust / deposits on the fins or filter.
- Dripping, more condensation than usual.
- Higher electricity bill – a clogged unit uses more power.
Filter cleaning ≠ professional cleaning
You can wash the filter at home every 2–4 weeks – it's important, but only surface-level. The heat exchanger and fan need deep professional bag-method cleaning, as you can't reach them at home.
Good rule of thumb: you maintain the filter monthly, the full internal cleaning is done by a pro once a year.
If you're unsure when it was last properly cleaned, it's probably time.
