Ferencváros has been one of the most heavily developed districts over the past two decades: air conditioners are practically standard in new apartment buildings along the Danube. In newly built apartments, the unit is typically well-positioned; cleaning is more about regular maintenance than access. Middle Ferencváros also has many renovated old tenement buildings where air conditioners were added later, fitted into the existing structure.
An outdoor unit hidden behind aesthetic facade cladding ventilates poorly and accumulates dust more easily. If the cladding is removable, cleaning is quick.
Proximity to the river brings higher humidity, which means more condensation and damper heat exchangers. This is mould's favourite environment — annual cleaning is no exaggeration here.
In open-plan living-kitchen spaces, the air conditioner draws in cooking steam and grease. Greasy deposits on the fins don't come off without chemical treatment.
With air conditioners installed during renovation, the outdoor unit often ends up in the courtyard or on an inner facade. We don't touch the installation for cleaning — we simply wash down the existing units.
